The Places We Remember
How scent creates atmosphere, emotion and lasting memories
When we think about a memorable place, we often picture how it looked: the light, the colours, the landscape or the details within the room.
But memory is shaped by more than what we see.
It might be the fragrance of lavender drifting through a countryside garden, the smell of polished wood inside a historic railway carriage or the waft of the fresh salty sea that immediately transports us back to a particular place, celebration or moment in time.
Scent has an extraordinary ability to connect us with places, people and moments. Often, we do not realise that connection has been created until we encounter the fragrance again and the memory comes flooding back.
THE INVISIBLE LAYER OF A SPACE
A we approach 2027, fragrance is becoming a more considered part of interior and experience design.
Vogue describes “scentscaping” as the intentional use of fragrance to create atmosphere, guide emotional responses and enhance how an environment is experienced. Better Homes & Gardens places it within the rise of “invisible wellness”: the elements we may not immediately see, but which can influence how calm, comfortable or connected we feel within a space.
It represents an important shift.
Fragrance is no longer treated simply as a finishing touch or a way to make somewhere smell pleasant. When thoughtfully chosen, it becomes another layer of the environment, just like lighting, colour, texture, music and temperature.
The question is no longer simply, “What should this space smell like?” It is: “How should people feel when they are here?”
SCENT, NOSTALGIA AND MEMORY
One of the most interesting themes emerging is our growing desire to reconnect with familiar, sensory experiences.
Country Living’s exploration of nostalgia highlights how fragrant plants, including roses and lavender can reconnect us with childhood gardens, loved ones and moments from the past. This is because fragrance can quietly become attached to an experience.
The aroma of a particular flower might take us back to a grandparent’s garden, while citrus can evoke a summer holiday or the freshness of an open window on a warm morning.
These associations are deeply personal, but places can create them too.
A carefully chosen signature scent can become part of a guest’s memory of a hotel, wedding, restaurant or journey. Long after they have left, encountering that aroma again can bring back something of how the experience felt.
CREATING A SENSE OF PLACE
At Henley Naturals, we begin every scenting project with the place itself. We consider its surroundings, history, architecture and purpose. We look at the people who will experience it and the feeling the business wants them to carry away.
Sometimes the inspiration is found in the landscape and surroundings, the flowers, herbs, trees and natural materials associated with a location. At other times, it comes from a building’s history, the rhythm of the day or the rituals that take place there.
For Silchester Farm, the surrounding countryside and its natural botanicals provided a rich starting point. Rose geranium and other plant-led notes reflected the softness and romance of the setting, helping the fragrance feel connected to the landscape rather than simply introduced into it.
For weddings and celebrations, that connection becomes especially meaningful. The chosen aroma can quietly accompany the flowers, food, music and atmosphere, becoming part of a day that guests and couples will remember for years to come.
SCENTING AN ICONIC JOURNEY
Our work with the British Pullman demonstrates how scent can become part of a much larger story.
Travelling aboard its historic carriages is already an experience for the senses: intricate marquetry, polished wood, beautifully laid tables, considered dining and views of the British countryside unfolding beyond the window. The fragrance needed to belong within that world.
Drawing inspiration from the train’s heritage and elegance, we created a bespoke essential-oil blend using black pepper, frankincense, may chang and black spruce. Grounding, warm and gently uplifting, the scent was developed to complement the carriages while adding another sensory dimension to the journey.
On board the prestigious carriage Celia, guests can also discover our Still Waters products presented in crystal dispensers: a quiet detail designed to sit naturally within an extraordinary setting.
FROM HOTELS TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
We apply the same thinking when working with hotels, hospitality and pub groups, Henley Royal Regatta and businesses such as Nomadic Washrooms.
Each setting has a different identity and purpose.
A hotel may want its fragrance to create an immediate sense of arrival and then continue gently through bedrooms, bathrooms and shared spaces. A pub or restaurant may need something warm and welcoming that complements the interiors without competing with food and drink.
For Henley Royal Regatta, scent became part of a distinctly local occasion: riverside air, summer greenery and the energy of one of Henley’s most recognisable events.
Nomadic Washrooms presented a different opportunity. Its beautifully designed mobile washrooms and shepherd-hut styling bring comfort and character to outdoor weddings and events. Natural, refillable amenities allow even this practical part of the guest experience to feel considered, memorable and connected to its setting.
Across every project, scent can create continuity. It carries the identity of the business into the smallest interactions, turning an everyday action, washing your hands, entering a room or preparing for sleep, into part of the overall experience.
MORE THAN A BEAUTIFUL FRAGRANCE
Effective scentscaping is not about placing the same fashionable fragrance everywhere.
At Henley Naturals, we work with pure essential oils because they offer more than fragrance alone. Each oil brings its own distinctive character and sensory qualities, from uplifting citrus and calming lavender to grounding frankincense and warming black pepper.
We combine these oils with naturally derived formulations and refillable presentation, allowing businesses to create a more thoughtful guest experience without treating sustainability as an afterthought.
Because the most memorable spaces engage more than the eye. They have an atmosphere. They make us feel something. And sometimes, without us even noticing, their scent becomes part of a memory we carry home.
