Natural Remedies for Hay Fever - Finding relief when spring arrives

This morning I woke up with that all-too-familiar feeling; a stuffy nose, heavy head and the dull pressure behind my eyes that tells me hay fever season has arrived.

The irony, of course, is that it always seems to arrive on the most beautiful days. The sun is shining, the garden is bursting back into life, and the promise of summer is suddenly everywhere.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you’ll know the routine, streaming eyes, endless sneezing and the inevitable trip to the pharmacy in search of the strongest antihistamine on the shelf.

My children suffer from it too, and watching them struggle with itchy eyes and constant sneezing is awful. Over time I’ve learnt that prevention is far better than cure. When you know the pollen season is coming, supporting your body early can make a huge difference.

As an advanced nurse practitioner I know that medication can absolutely have its place, however, spending more of my recent years surrounded by  aromatherapy,  I’ve found that natural remedies,  particularly essential oils can be incredibly supportive during hay fever season.

Why essential oils can help

Essential oils have been used in aromatherapy for centuries to support the respiratory system, calm inflammation and help the body respond more gently to environmental irritants.

Many oils naturally contain compounds that:

  • Help open the airways

  • Break down mucus and congestion

  • Calm irritation in the nasal passages

  • Support relaxation when your body feels run down

Used in a diffuser, steam inhalation or diluted in a carrier oil, they can provide gentle support throughout the day.

My go-to essential oils for hay fever are:

Lavender, this is my absolute wonder oil. Its floral, herbaceous scent is instantly calming and it has natural soothing and antimicrobial properties. During hay fever season it can help relax breathing and calm irritated skin if allergies cause rashes or sensitivity.

Rosemary, contains a compound called cineole which helps break down mucus and ease congestion. I find it particularly helpful when hay fever brings that foggy, heavy-headed feeling, rosemary has a naturally uplifting quality that can help restore mental clarity.

Eucalyptus, few oils are as effective for respiratory support as eucalyptus. Its cooling sensation helps clear the airways and ease congestion, making breathing feel noticeably easier. It blends beautifully with lavender in a diffuser or steam inhalation.

Tea tree is widely known for its cleansing and antibacterial properties. In a diffuser it helps purify the air while supporting the body’s response to airborne irritants like pollen.

A simple hay fever bath ritual

When symptoms feel overwhelming, one of my favourite ways to reset is a warm bath with calming oils.

Try adding:

  • 2 drops Chamomile essential oil

  • 1 drop Lavender essential oil

Breathe deeply, allow the steam and scent to open the airways, and give your body time to rest. Sometimes this simple ritual can make a surprising difference. Hay fever affects everyone differently, and natural remedies work best when you take the time to find what suits your body. If symptoms are severe or persistent, it’s always important to seek medical advice. But for many people, introducing essential oils into their daily routine can offer a more natural, supportive way to navigate the pollen season.

And when the sun is shining and the garden is alive again, anything that helps us enjoy those moments a little more fully is worth exploring.
